Flex User Group 2012 Tour: North America Dates

    ***Important***

If you are developing rich Internet applications with Flex, please make sure a representative from your project team attends this event

    Register right now: http://flexroadshow.eventbrite.com

    ***Important***

Adobe is visiting local user groups to discuss recent announcements regarding Flex and the Flash Platform. Planned speakers are still being finalized, but we're likely to have Greg Wilson, Group Manager Enterprise Platform Evangelist at Adobe Systems as our headliner. Others will be announced as we get closer to our event, but expect an all-star lineup.

These meetings will clarify any changes to Flex and Flash including updates on the runtimes and tooling. Additionally, the sessions will educate folks about the Apache process and what it takes for Flex SDK, as a project within the Apache Software Foundation, to continue to thrive. These meetings will be the best place to get accurate and up-to-date information about anything related to Flex.

Our gracious sponsors, Adobe, 360|Flex, RIA 5280 and Rocky Mountain Adobe Users Group are going to make this a great night. We have some great giveaways in store:

    • Two tickets to 360|Flex in Denver on April 15-18
    • RMAUG's final two Adobe Flex branded T-shirts (they are larges)
    • Adobe's providing beer and soda for everyone!

     Agenda:

    • 6:30 - Networking & Socialization
    • 7:00 - Panel Begins

More information about Adobe's Flex User Group Tour (including other cities and dates) can be found on this page.

    Presentation #1 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

    Speaker - Jeremy Williams

Jeremy Williams started his career in the waning years of COBOL mainframe application development, that's right - the big iron. After helping the world narrowly escape the disaster that could have been y2k he moved on to the internets. Jeremy has spent the last 15 years getting into adventures and moving on to the next project much like Bruce Banner, but without all the rage. He mirrored the industry, working with whichever language was all the rage. Moving from Java to .Net, then dabbling in PHP and then spending the last few years in the trenches of Flex development. Since finally giving up his car phone for a smart phone Jeremy has started to focus on mobile development but still talks about how he started in COBOL as if it gives him some sort of credibility.

Title - Frameworks: Flexing my Powerful RobotLegs

RobotLegs is an IoC framework that's been rising on the Flex framework scene. It's a pure AS3 microarchitecture so it can be used in non-Flex projects as well. One thing that I like about the framework is that it does a pretty good job of telling you what's wrong when you're building your app. For example it'll let you know if you've missed adding a class to the context. In this presentation I'll show you how to set up a Flex app from the ground up using RobotLegs. In addition I'll show you how to set up Flex Unit with RobotLets so that you can write unit tests or do test driven development for your project. I've worked with several Flex frameworks and RobotLegs is one of my favorites so far. This will be more of a live coding session than a theoretical talk about IoC. In this session you'll learn how to set up your package structure, create a context, create a central data model, map events to commands, create and communicate with services, set up your views and use mediators as backing classes that will contain the ActionScript for them. I'll also share a technique that I've been using that splits the context up so there isn't one giant class to manage.

Title - You don't know Flex about Objective-C

Cover the basics! Translating your development skills from Flex to iOS development, starting at the very beginning and taking a simple Flex application and converting it into a native IOS application. What hurdles and challenges you will encounter in your initial steps to develop an iOs application. This will cover a variety of topics including structures, data types, memory management, how to control UI's and use API's available to development. This is targeted towards experienced Flex developers with strong ActionScript skills that have very little to no experience with iOS development and are looking to start developing Apple targeted applications.
